depends entirely on the purpose of the server and the environment in which it will be used OS X server in a mac environment win2k in a windows environment (haven't looked at 2k3 yet) for "real" *nix, i like solaris (irix and hpux are clunky, from my experience) for linux, i like gentoo and debian fo...

there are 40 millions lines of code in windows xp (35 million in win2k). you could do a crude (or very nice one, depending on skill level) clone checker in under 5k lines of code. and computer science includes programming. (software engineering is an entirely different matter, and discussion) in the...

i don't think it's quite as intensive as you think it would be even the most populated ircd's generally sit below a few percent cpu usage on any decent machine. a large webserver can be expected to get 100,000 hits per hour, often doing server-side scripting, which is more than a simple clone check....

OPME would, i think, require too much governing to prevent abuse. it probably wouldn't be too hard to find a day/time when most opers are asleep or ignoring operwalls when one could use it on a non-drone channel. and with some drones now being eggdrop 1.6.* for win32, it could become difficult to di...

hiding version reply is just a standard security through obscurity if someone really wanted to exploit a client, it's not hard to join a channel and ctcp/msg all clients in the channel to attempt to exploit them, so it's not like security through obscurity really protects you that much. though i do ...

this is usually something on the client end, or between you and your isp. there are many things that can cause this: bad network drivers bad wiring in your network faulty firewall hardware failure (either your computer, your hub, etc) problems on your ISP level etc basically anything that can cause ...

- Topic: Why do YOU use ipv6?

most core network equipment is moving to support ipv6, but it's a slow rollout because there's a lot of equipment to upgrade. upgrades are mainly starting at the larger networks (ie - AT&T, UUNet, etc) before it trickles down to the smaller networks. This is why a lot of ipv6 has to be tunneled thro...
