irc.igs.ca delinks

Postby Hardy » Thu Aug 05, 2010 2:38 pm

It is a sad day for me to announce the delink of irc.igs.ca. The server was linked as irc.avalonworks.ca in March 2003, handling 14,500 clients at our peak. We reverted to irc.igs.ca after the purchase and dismantling of AvalonWorks.

elsif, the admin of the server discontinued working for the new owner Cybersurf two years ago and was able to obtain sponsorship from them to keep the service going. Last year, Cybersurf was purchased by a company called Distributel, who served notice that within a year they would shut down the data center the server is located. So here we are, delinking the server Friday 6. August.

Thank you to elsif and all the great opers we had on irc.igs.ca the past years. And thanks to our users :)

Very sad to lose another Canadian EFnet Server.

EFnet could use a couple more, although the ones that exist can handle the current Canadian userbase just fine I would imagine. Still, sucks seeing IGS go.

Long Live Canadian-EFnet!
