php installation help

hello and pardon the basic question as i am new to this. trying to install apache, mysql and php. apache is working fine (did a test). php does not seem to be working. everything is on my local computer (not on a serve). IE cannot find a php test file that i created. what am i doing wrong? thnx for your help.
